Suarez vs the Canaries

This question caused just as much controversy as the banana question (Specialist Round 4, Food and Drink, Question 4), and even gained an Armadillo nomination from IJ. (We know who you are; why not use your real name?!)

On the other hand, someone who didn't even deign to sign with a pesudonym commented "To be fair I thought the Suarez question was an interesting one and was something I was well aware of, and I'm no fan of LFC or the hungry Uruguayan. To my mind it was more obscure to ask a couple of weeks back who carried the Olympic flag in a 2016 ceremony."

It happened between April 2012 and April 2014; the details are here.

For what it's worth, as someone who supports a team that currently plays in the Championship (but was in the Premier League throughout the time we're talking about), I'm on the side of those who think this kind of question is for Premier League anoraks and supporters of Liverpool FC only. Fair enough, once you've heard it it's the kind of thing that's likely to stick in your mind, but I think I'm right in saying that no one in the quiz I took part in remembered hearing it before.

To my mind, it would have been fairer to ask which Liverpool striker achieved this feat (giving the dates). That would have reduced the odds considerably.

As for the 2016 Olympic flag ... that was my question, and I didn't know that one either. But this is standard quiz fodder, this was the most recent Olympiad, and I can't agree that it's more obscure than the exploits of one footballer against one opposition team several years ago.
